Why Cillian Murphy is Not on Social Media
Cillian Murphy's Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders may have won over fans with his steely attitude, but there's more to him than just being a flashy movie star. Despite his fame, the Ireland native prefers to focus on his work rather than being distracted by paparazzi or red carpet appearances.
1. He’s a Luddite
Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor renowned for playing unique characters. His career spans both indie and major films, with Cillian earning a reputation for portraying daring roles that have cemented his place as an under-the-radar Hollywood mainstay.
Murphy, a native of Cork, Ireland born on May 25, 1976 to Brendan and his French-tutor wife, was the oldest child among four siblings and grew up in Ballintemple. At an early age he began playing music; an English instructor then encouraged him to pursue acting as a career.
After failing his first year of law school, he dropped out to pursue acting full time. His stage debut came in 1996 with Disco Pigs and since then, he's made a name for himself on London's theatrical scene.
He went on to become an internationally acclaimed actor, taking on intriguing characters in both film and stage. In 2005 he made his first big screen appearance as Scarecrow in Batman Begins before staring in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
Since then, he's been a major character in the hit TV show Peaky Blinders. The series, which follows the exploits of a Birmingham gang, has become hugely successful in the UK and can now be streamed worldwide on Netflix.
His latest film is a retelling of J. Robert Oppenheimer's creation of the atomic bomb called Oppenheimer, in which his character undergoes an intense transformation that he describes as "exhausting."
He not only acts, but he also writes songs and plays guitar. In their early twenties, he and his brother Paidi formed a band which was on the verge of signing a record deal.
Though he didn't achieve stardom, his passion for music remains strong and he frequently performs live. Additionally, he hosts his own radio show on BBC Radio 6 Music.
He's long been an activist for social justice causes and recently led a 25,000 strong protest to increase abortion rights in Ireland. Additionally, he's spoken out against sexual abuse allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein as well. Furthermore, he supports LGBTQ rights and has taken part in demonstrations against sex-based violence in Ireland.
2. He’s too old
Social media is an online communication tool that enables users to connect and share with others. What started as a way for individuals to stay in touch has now been adopted by businesses and governments alike. While using social media can be an excellent way for fans to stay engaged, it should also be remembered that it could also be misused for negative purposes.
Instagram is one of the world's most popular and influential social media platforms, boasting over 1 billion users worldwide who can share their pictures. It serves as a great outlet for bloggers and influencers to showcase their work while building their brands.
Pinterest is another popular social media platform, established in 2010 with over 335 million monthly active users. On this platform, users can create boards or pinboards where they store and organize images, videos, and other media.
Many of these websites are free and provide a range of features. Popular options include posting content, creating playlists, and following other users.
Aside from social media platforms, there are other ways to stay connected with your friends and followers. Some of these methods include blogging, video sharing, and business networks.
Despite their widespread appeal, some still opt to avoid them - particularly celebrities.
Some celebrities are so private that they have no social media accounts at all - this includes some of the world's most beloved actors and actresses, such as Cillian Murphy.
Cillian is a successful and popular actor, yet he does not have a Facebook or other type of social media profile. This is because Cillian dislikes being approached about promoting himself on these platforms.
He finds having a large social media presence and being asked about his personal life to be highly irritating, so he has chosen to forgo these platforms and focus on developing his career and work instead.
3. He’s married
Cillian Murphy is a very private individual, preferring to keep his private life out of the spotlight. That is why he does not post on social media platforms.
He is married to artist Yvonne McGuinness and they have two children together. Both reside in Dublin, Ireland where they enjoy spending time with their families.
They share an intimate bond and have been married for almost 20 years. Unfortunately, it's difficult to get a glimpse into their personal lives on social media as they don't open up about them.
Yvonne is a gifted artist, with her works featured in multiple films and TV shows. Additionally, she has even written her own scripts.
Cillian is very busy with his career, yet he makes sure to spend as much time as possible with his wife and children. This helps him remain grounded in his work while giving them a healthy balance.
They began dating in 1996 and have been happily married for almost two decades. Together they have two children, Malachy and Aran, whom their parents are immensely proud of.
They are a close-knit family, deeply loving each other. Both share an appreciation of art and film, but Yvonne prioritizes being creative.
She has created short films such as Procession, Between Us and Charlie's Place. Their wedding took place in southern France and only close friends and family were invited.
Cillian and Yvonne have been happily married for nearly two decades, enjoying time with their family. With such a strong bond, it is no wonder why they remain so contented in their relationship.
Cillian has an active career in addition to his acting career. He plays guitar and sings, plus he's worked as a DJ on BBC Radio 6 Music.
He is actively engaged in politics and an advocate for empathy. He believes it's essential to teach children empathy and how to be a decent human being.
4. He’s too busy
Irish actor Cillian Murphy, best known for his role as hardened gangster Thomas Shelby on Peaky Blinders, has kept his busy schedule off social media platforms like Instagram. He prefers to keep his private life private.
Cillian is a quiet man who prefers not to be in the spotlight. Unlike other actors, he does not wish for his face to be shown off to the public and often avoids press conferences or interviews due to this preference.
He has never shied away from taking action on pressing issues in his country, such as marching with 25,000 people to support women's right to choose abortion and denouncing sexual abuse allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein in 2016.
He has also been an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ community. When homosexuality was first prohibited in Ireland, he joined a protest and spearheaded efforts for marriage equality (as reported by The Guardian).
He has also been active in campaigns to end child slavery and abolish the death penalty, serving as a spokesperson for Women in Need charity.
Despite all these obligations, Murphy hasn't given up on his passion for acting. In fact, he plans on continuing his career in the industry and already has several exciting projects underway.
At present, however, he is focused on his latest collaboration with director Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer - a $100m biopic about physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb and man with some dark secrets that would come back to haunt him in the future.
Nolan's sixth collaboration with Murphy is scheduled to hit theaters in 2023. Total Film Magazine recently shared an array of images from the upcoming movie, featuring new shots of Murphy as Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife Katherine.
It is worth noting that he has already co-starred in three films with Nolan, including The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception - earning him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. Furthermore, his other major projects include In Time (2011), Red Lights (2012) and Dunkirk (2017).
